Why spotlight for jewellery
In a real jewellery shop the room is dim and the case is lit. That is not decoration. It is how attention gets directed to something very small. The spotlight effect does the same on a screen: the photo dims, and the part under the pointer stays bright, so the customer is the one aiming the lamp.
The tray below uses thick glass: each photo becomes a small slab with a bevel and a line of light along its edge, which is close enough to a display case that the photo starts to feel like an object behind something. Both effects need bright, sharp pictures. Dim photography on a dark page leaves them with nothing to do.

Questions
Which effect shows off small details?
The lens lets people inspect. Spotlight does not enlarge anything, but it directs the eye. Many shops use spotlight on the home page and a lens on the product page.
Will thick glass hide part of the photo?
The bevel takes a fixed width at the edges, set in pixels. Keep the piece away from the edge of the frame, or lower the edge setting.
Does it work on phones?
A finger on the picture aims the spotlight. Thick glass needs no pointer at all, so it looks the same on every device.
